WHA in Mississippi

Biloxi Health FairDr. Thang Ba Pham, Dental Team Coordinator, and Dr. Howard NGO represented WHA at the Biloxi, Mississippi Health Fair on April 19, 2009.  WHA's informational booth provided information about the WHA program and our WHA dentists provided free dental screenings for adults and children.  Several hundred people turned out for the event which showcased the many health-related resources available to Biloxi residents.  This was our team's second visit to this area hard-hit by Hurricane Katrina.  We noticed that life has gradually improved for many.

WHA in Texas

Jonathan Hoang Lam, MD, WHA Fundraising Chair, reports that "on MayWHA volunteers at Dallas Asian Festival 2, WHA Team Members Dr Jonathan Lam, Dr Howard Nguyen, Mimi Phuong Vo, R.N., and Quan Luu, PharmD., staffed a booth to promote the WHA program for the first time at the annual Dallas Asian Festival.

Despite the gloomy overcast sky of typical springtime weather in North Texas, the Festival was well attended by several thousand visitors.  There was good traffic thru the WHA Booth.  We were interviewed by a local Chinese newspaper Quan Luu being interviewed at the Dallas Asian Festivalreporter.  Team Member Quan Luu gave the reporter details of previous medical and dental missions to Vietnam and Laos.  I met with an old acquaintance, an ER nurse from Bangladesh, who expressed interest in joining WHA and perhaps would help to coordinate a trip to her home country.  Throughout the day, the WHA booth passed out dozens of informational brochures and free lip balms.   The Festival ended in the afternoon with a down-pouring thunderstorm.  Luckily, we packed up just minutes before getting soaking-wet.

We're looking forward to staffing the Asian Festival again next year to promote WHA and its missions."

Mission Update

WHA is working toward its next mission, a medical, dental and educational mission,  in April 2010.  Sites under consideration are Vietnam, Nepal and Myanmar.  Preparations will begin in earnest this fall.

Previous mission members have described their experience as a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."  If you are interested in joining the 2010 mission, please let us know early, keep your spring schedule flexible, and save up your vacation days.

Thank you for your continued support of WHA.  Please help us spread the word by forwarding this e-mail to your colleagues and friends who may be interested in WHA.  Suffering is less when you are there to help.
