Haiti Earthquake Disaster
WHA working to assist with Haiti recovery
effort
The recent 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti devastated this
impoverished Caribbean nation and blanketed its citizens with
unimaginable suffering and misery.
The medical needs of the Haitian people will cont inue, and perhaps be even greater, once the immediate
rescue phase is completed. WHA is exploring an opportunity to
send a team of medical personnel to Haiti in March 2010 in partnership
with the National Organization for the Advancement of Haitians (NOAH Haiti).
NOAH Haiti is a non-profit organization established in 1991 to advance
humanitarian efforts and initiatives in Haiti. The WHA team would
help staff a field clinic set up by NOAH Haiti.
WHA members are planning an event in the coming months to raise funds
for WHA's own mission, as well as for other organizations, such as the
Red Cross, that are assisting in Haiti. Please contact us
immediately if you are interested in helping with the Haiti medical
relief or fund raising effort.

Mission Update
WHA
will embark on its next missions in May and November 2010.
From May 14-21, a small team of physicians will
provide training for doctors at the school of health sciences in Buon Me
Thuot in Central Vietnam. They will also assess the medical
needs of the local population in preparation for the November
mission. WHA is still looking for one or two more physicians
interested in clinical medical teaching to residents and physicians to
participate in this mission. Please contact us if you are
interested in participating.
The
results of the May assessment-trip will form the basis for the
larger medical, dental and educational mission to Buon Me Thuot
from October 30 - November 14. WHA is looking for a full team
of doctors, dentists and pharmacists to conduct this mission.
Previous mission members have described their experience with WHA as a
"once-in-a-lifetime opportunity." If you are interested
in joining this mission, please let us know as soon as you can ---we
are already putting together the team. And don't forget to save
up your vacation days!
In
addition, WHA recently agreed with the Government of Nepal to conduct a
medical and den tal relief mission to that country in 2011. As one
of the poorest countries in Asia, half of Nepal's population lives
below the international poverty line of US$1.25 a day.
WHA will work hard to extend its helping hand to
the people of Nepal. In May 2010, several members of the
Vietnam assessment team will also visit Nepal to conduct an initial
assessment in preparation for the 2011 mission.

Blue
Lantern Benefit Wrap-up
World
Health Ambassador's Blue Lantern Benefit, held on November 8 at
Westwood Country Club in Vienna, was a sold out event with more than
320 guests. While many guests came from the Washington, DC
metropolitan area, others traveled from as far as Massachusetts, New
York, Florida, Georgia and Vietnam to attend.
The
Director of WHA's Medical Teams, Dr. Bonnie Cohen, and WHA mission
member, Dr. Ashok Chauhan, provided first-hand accounts of the
medical needs seen on WHA missions, as well as their personal
experiences as WHA volunteers. WHA Director, Dr. Thien Do,
described the results of WHA's 2008 mission to Laos, during which WHA
volunteers treated more than 1,500 patients. The evening included
dinner, a show by renowned singer Khanh Ha, a casino and
auctions.
The
Blue Lantern Benefit raised more than $35,000 for WHA. Corporate
sponsors included PNC Bank, SunTrust Bank, Advantage Settlement, and
Allstate Insurance. As WHA's visibility and reputation has grown,
donations from private citizens exceeded the amounts raised in previous
years. Proceeds from the Blue Lantern Benefit will fund WHA's
upcoming missions. A full medical relief mission by WHA typically
costs approximately $60,000, thus, our fundraising effort still has a
way to go. Visit our website to see how you can contribute and help.
